SSI Specialty: Search & Recovery – Find What Others Leave Behind

Whether it’s a dropped dive knife, a lost anchor, or even a hidden wreck—being able to locate and recover objects underwater is an incredibly useful skill. The SSI Search & Recovery Specialty teaches you how to effectively search for missing items and bring them safely back to the surface.

This course is ideal for both recreational divers and those who want to develop their problem-solving, navigation, and teamwork skills underwater.

What You Will Learn

Over the course of 4 dives in 2 days, you’ll learn and practice:

  • How to plan and execute underwater search patterns
  • Use of a compass, natural navigation, and orientation techniques
  • Adapting search methods to account for currents, visibility, and bottom conditions
  • How to locate both small and large objects
  • Safe and effective use of lift bags for controlled recovery
  • Proper communication and coordination with your dive buddy or team

You’ll also learn how to evaluate risk, consider object weight and shape, and how to avoid damaging the environment during recovery operations.

Real-World Scenarios

This course includes hands-on scenarios that simulate realistic situations—like retrieving a lost piece of equipment, searching for a dive site feature, or locating a specific object based on limited information. You’ll use tools such as search ropes, reels, and lift devices while applying structured techniques for maximum efficiency.

By the end of the course, you’ll not only be able to find and recover items underwater—you’ll also gain valuable experience in underwater navigation, spatial awareness, and task management.

The SSI Search & Recovery Specialty is a rewarding and practical course that strengthens your dive skills and prepares you for real-world challenges beneath the surface.
